Santa Claus finally legal in Krakow
President of Krakow has annulated an edict from 19th century disposed by former President Joseph Friedlein. Canceled ban was prohibiting to walk along the streets of Krakow dressed up as a Santa Claus. The reason was prosaic – just to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed by Santas and to prevent children watching drunk Saints. Those days mainly bricklayers where dressing up for Santas to earn extra as during the winter there were no work at their profession. Michal Niezabitowski, a director of Krakow’s Historical Museum says: Santas were gladly rented by parents to make a surprise for their children. They were visiting several homes each evening. In one they got some money in another a booze so it was obvious that at the end of the day some of them where quite well oiled - he adds with a smile. As the records shows it often happened that the Austrian police was arresting troops of drunken St. Clauses. Therefore the city decided to ban Santas walking in the streets not to give a bed example to the children.
